The three bridges is a 'style thing'. Traditional pocketwatches generally had about three bridges, one for the escapement, another for gear train and last one for the barrel. The original 1867 three gold bridges pocketwatch was merely a rearrangement of the design. The only mystery is what inspired the original three gold bridges.
